to give a soul to the product I make, that's what I love

What do you make

I make wooden products. Woodwork of any kind. Kitchen and home furniture- Dining and coffee tables, epoxy tables, cutting/serving/charcuterie boards, book shelves, night stands, beds... Anything you like. I prefer to work with solid wood rather than plywood or other substitutes. I also focus on wood carving and creating more artistic makings. My absolute favourite and also what I am the most proud of are my guitars. I love to design, create and make stuff I consider challenging, but I am here to fulfill all customer's wishes. Need a woodworking project done? Let me know.

Is this a part time or full time pursuit?

Part time.

Where’s home, and what do you like about it?

I live in Jasper. I love snowboarding, that's why I chose to come to Canada and to Rocky Mountains. Ever since I was a kid I dreamt about snowboarding in here, because I knew The Rockies from my video games I used to play. I like small-town vibes, where people know each other and also I love nature and I feel like I am in the middle of it here.

What’s your origin story? How did you get started with this work?

I grew up in a small village in the Czech Republic. We had a forest just behind our house and I spent my whole childhood playing in nature surrounded by trees. That's probably why I love nature so much. My father was working in the forest and he spent his free time in his workshop where I was always helping him as a kid. It was also him who pushed me to go to study cabinet making. I've always had a plan in my head to have my own workshop. That's why I extended my studies with business education too. But I also dreamt about going abroad and fulfill my snowboarding dreams in the Canadian Rockies. So here I am leaving in Jasper starting my woodwork business.

What pushes and/or inspires you to be creative?

First of all, it's people around me who can see and understand what is hidden in me and without them I would probably never find out or it would take much longer time to realize. Initially, it was my college teacher who would never give me an ordinary project to create. He would always pick a unique project and pushed me to get the best out of myself. Right now it's my girlfriend. She was the one who told me to try to carve human faces into the wood. I would probably never think of that. But I said why not I would try. She is also my biggest support and critic. When I told her I wanted to make a guitar, she said go for it. Also, I've never wanted to make serial products. Custom guitars are exciting things full of life. Those moments when my heart beats like crazy when I am finishing guitar, those seconds before I plug it in and try to play it, it's like moments before explosion. So exciting. Nowadays, wooden products can be the same or very similar, but to give a soul to the product I make, that's what I love and that's exactly why I do what I do and what pushes me forward.

How can people purchase your work?

They can get in touch with me through my Instagram page Jakub_Sebela_Woodwork where is also my contact info or through my Facebook page Jakub Sebela Woodwork. I like to meet my customers first and discuss their needs and wishes before I can get into the production. That's why I focus on custom woodwork.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I do what I love and I work hard to accomplish my dreams. I hope to find customers who love the wood as much as I do and help them to get what they want.
